Troika
The Russian word troika generally refers to a group of three things that belong together in some way. In this particular case, it is a work that combines three well-known Russian folk songs into a medley, with the tempo increasing from one song to the next.
The piece opens with the solemn and slow Song of the Volga Boatmen, followed by The Birch Tree, where the tempo is already considerably faster. This section then leads into the famous Kalinka, whose irresistible accelerando provides the work with an exhilarating and thrilling conclusion.
