Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) live on Internet

On Friday 2 and Saturday 3 December 2011 the Dutch National Championships will be held in the Martiniplaza in Groningen. This competition will be held for the 31st time, and more than 40 bands will compete in 5 different sections. This year the organizers commissioned four new works from composers of different countries. The popular quartet Exit Brass from Belgium will entertain the audience during the adjudicators meetings.

The Austrian composer Hermann Pallhuber wrote a very difficult but interesting work called Variety of Skills for the Championships Section. He used thematic material form Jan Koetsier’s Symphony for Brass.
Jan de Haan was celebrating his 60th birthday this year and because of his strong connections with the NBK he dedicated his latest work Alhambra to the organizers.
An existing work was chosen by the new Repertoire Information Centre (RIC) in Arnhem for the second section. The work Fanfare and Love Songs by Gavin Higgins will get its Dutch premiere in Groningen.
Sinfonietta no 1 written by Johan de Meij (now living in New York) is a joined commission for the Swiss and the Dutch Championships.  It is Johan’s wish that the work will be as successful as his Extreme Make-Over which was written for the European Championships of 2005 in Groningen.
Another composer who will celebrate his 60th birthday this year is Philip Sparke. The institute for amateur music Kunstfactor commissioned him to write a piece for the 4th section and undoubtedly Evolution will be a welcome addition to the repertoire for the lower sections.

All the performances of this new and interesting repertoire can be followed live by a live-stream on www.omroplive.nl  The streaming is a co-production of the broadcasting companies Omrop Fryslan, Mirasound and Videoscherm.com
