Purcellian Fantasia - Jan de Haan
Test piece in the 4th division of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) in 2017.
This composition is based on the march from Henry Purcell’s Funeral Music of Queen Mary II, a work that was written in the year of 1694. In this fantasia, the main theme is followed by various movements flowing from one to the next; these do not only elaborate on the theme but also form a contrast with it. Although the thematic material at times diverges so much that the work acquires a character of its own, the composer keeps going back to fragments of the theme.

Deze compositie is gebaseerd op de mars uit Henry Purcell’s “Funeral Music of Queen Mary II” Een werk uit 1694. In deze fantasia wordt het hoofdthema gevolgd door verschillende in elkaar overgaande delen die niet alleen voortborduren op het thema maar daar ook een contrast mee vormen. Alhoewel het thematisch materiaal soms zodanig verandert dat het werk plaatselijk een nieuwe karakteristiek krijgt grijpt de componist toch steeds weer terug op flarden van het thema.
